How do you start a AC locomotive?

Just curious ... how does starting a AC locomotive work?

For DC, it's obvious: dump battery power into the generator and it becomes a "starter motor". Has to be something else for AC. Inverter (unlikely just for starting)? Separate windings for DC motor use? Separate starter motor (very unlikely)?
