There was a switch long before the MP15AC (EMD's only production switcher with a traction alternator).
The GP35 was the highest hp EMD to use the D32 main generator, which required many, many steps of traction motor and main generator shunting plus the usual series-parallel to parallel transition to stay within the working limits of the main gen and traction motors.
The change came with the GP40 (1965) which got the AR-10 allowing it to run the D77 traction motors in full parallel. The D32 is limited to 3200 amps, and was still used by the GP38/SD38/GP39/SD39 unless the AR-10 option was ordered. The SD40 still used series-parallel to parallel transition to stay within the current limits. Alco and GE switched about the same time for the same reason. Traction alternators became standard with the EMD Dash-2 and GE Dash-7 domestic road units due to their higher capacity and lower maintenance.
The series-parallel to parallel transition was still used in six axle units to stay within current limits, but both EMD and GE have shifted to a scheme where the traction alternator itself is split and operarted in series or parallel.
