Holland America put those on there probably at least 20 years ago. At least at the time there wasn't a decent HVAC unit that could handle a dome and fit downstairs anywhere. A lot of room is taken up by a genset.............Holland had to supply the power for their cars as the Alaska RR didn't provide HEP and what they charged per car to haul made it uneconomical to consider a separate power car. Ugly, true, but they work. The folks who pay to ride inside the cars can't see them...........
