They are indeed former MARC units, reunited with SLRG 133 which is ex-MARC still with "MARC-MARC-MARC" seating surfaces. The 133 is pretty to look at, but sadly awful to sit in unless you're 5'6" or shorter.
Losing the kneejerk flag appliques in exchange for a fresh paint job isn't a conspiracy. I look forward to catching members of the sour and verbose foamer mafia sneaking down to grab images of these "unphotographable" monstrosities leading the train into the gorgeous light of a Santa Cruz sunset. The 84 should hopefully be in matching paint by the start of revenue operations 11/23.
