We did impact testing on these loads at West Colton to see if the loads would shift. Of concern was where convex surfaces contacted the same on adjacent slabs. They barely moved if at all. As the slabs were slightly bowed it was decided to drive wooden wedges in between the slabs in places where they could be inserted. These measures lowered the time and cost of loading which got SP the business at least for a while. Then ATSF captured the traffic. Note the difference in the cars in the photos. We ran a test train with some kind of "classroom" car on the rear equipped with a galley. If I recall correctly the speed was limited to 25 mph or so. The carman who doubled as a chef provided the best meals imaginable, easily the equal of the finest dining car. If anyone knows what happened to that car I would appreciate knowing. Thanks.
