All of the slabs of ingots came from Brazil with some coming from Mexico when the boat from Brazil was at sea. Now All of the slabs come from Brazil. As my moniker states Kaiser is the spot that I railfanned during the time that Santa Fe got the contract on Janusry 3,1993 from the Espee and has had it since under BNSF. Since I am a former resident of the Kaiser area as well, I can answer the question about Oregon Steel's slabs and occupancy of their mill. At one time Santa Fe ran two loaded slab trains which rails and myself, called the Big Slab which was 68-74 cars long and the Little Slab had 36 cars. The Big Slab (L LAT1911)had five units from the GP40X-GP50-GP60, and B40-8 rosters, and the Little Slab (L LAT1921)had three units from the same fleet. The longer train went to CSI and the Little Slab went to OSM but was unloaded by CSI as there is only one rail crane to unload the cars. All eight engines and all 104-110 cars went back to Watson the following night as the Empty Slab train (L LAT1931). The current trains are now labeled as the L LAC1911 for the loads and L LAC1931 for the empties. OSM moved off of CSI property in the late 1990's and now only the two slab trains of the three remain.
