Yep, the people of the Northbay are not totally prostrate beneath the appointed agencies such SMART, ABAG, or the Bay Area Air Pollution Control District. We all reserve the right to give them the well-deserved three-finger salute. Yeah, I think there are a lot of freaky snobs who object to the Air Pollution nannies who always slap on a fireplace burn ban on the coldest nights and hand the PG&E monopoly all that mandatory extra cash. Any chance for a mandatory gas discount on those enforcement nites? Yeah, sure. But some claim Mansourian is making $750 a day.
The freight we're talking about is subsidized. Who do you think has kept them going? It is not fair to the truckers or the taxpayers. I suggest that if the Eureka extension had been put off until the First World War it never would have been built. And I believe it came close to being abandoned during the Depression. We would not have to fret over the freight vs. passenger issue.
The southern end of the line was built in the 1870's and is full of curves and grade crossings. Many of the intersecting roads are jammed with traffic. You can tout Darwinian Selection all you want but the locals who wrote off the NWP as history 30 years are going to like it even less with crossing fatalities. It is a certainty that there will be litigation and political moves to lower that 80mph.
This thing was poorly conceived and it will inevitably be reshaped as the years go by. The discontent will not evaporate; just as the locals have been grumping about the high spending GG Bridge for decades. Now is good-bye toll takers and Marin is putting out its bus system to bid. I assure you when SMART starts to run up some real red ink and tries to grab bus subsidy funding from the counties, the towns and GGT there will be a groundswell to reform SMART. Reform is putting it gently.
Schemes do not always go to plan - looks like State tax revenues went down almost a billion since Prop 30 passed and the rich people made their adjustments.
