Both descriptions are far too simplistic, and ignore the GP38AC and GP39DC variations which are generally accepted as being different models instead of simple options.
The GP39 photo is plain wrong. Note that they do list which railroads had the GP39, and BN/BNSF isn't one of them! A quick roster check finds that the BN/BNSF 2973 is a GP39V, a GP35 rebuilt by VMV that has very little in common with an EMD factory built GP39. The second of the "pair of GP39s" in the photo isn't even a turbocharged engine - notice the clearly visible air filter box. Roster check shows the 2290 as a GP38-2.
