Why no MUNI Tix @ 4th & Townsend ???

The wife and I spent last Friday in The City, where we found out MUNI has closed their ticket office @ 4th & Townsend. A through search didn't turn up anywhere nearby that we could purchase a MUNI Daypass, or even single ride tickets. Even the T - Line trolley stops nearby were devoid of any ticket machines !!! ( We had to walk up to the cable car stop @ Market & Powell. )
I cannot understand why MUNI would not have even a ticket machine at one of their busiest locations, what with all the commuters going to & from Caltrain. Any ideas ???
