Curious Two and Stash, et al:
I believe that Stash's comment about there being a bridge that is out between Birds Landing and Molena is totally incorrect for a couple of good reasons and more :
1. Here is the list of bridges in the new "historic district of the SN" as recently submitted to the Feds.... (with MP's)
Bridges (Trestles)
Bridges allowed the line to cross various water courses and drainages along the route. They were originally constructed
of cedar with concrete abutments. Vertical support posts were driven into the soil. Over time, soil conditions caused
these support posts to deteriorate and rot at and just below ground level. These posts were cut at ground level and new
concrete footings were added underneath the cut areas to support the posts. As a part of Sacramento Northern’s ongoing
maintenance and upgrades, the original cedar structures were eventually replaced with creosote-treated wood
timbers. All these changes occurred during the period of significance. The 7 bridges in the district are contributing and
listed by mile post from south to north.
MP 50.49 – 60 feet long
MP 52.54 – 155 feet long
MP 54.07 – 60 feet long
MP 55.13 – 60 feet long
MP 56.51 – 60 feet long
MP 56.94 – 60 feet long
MP 64.28 – 120 feet long
Look at the first two on the list... Molena is MP 51.97 and Birds Landing is MP 52.5 ...
The closest bridge would be the second one on the list at MP 52.54 which is NORTH of Birds Landing and currently operated over.
2. Please re-read my original comments on this thread right after "Curious Two" first asked his question, to wit:
"A metal culvert south of Molena has been rusted out for many years, causing the embankment under the track to wash away. Although this location is well south of WRM's operating track, with the rails suspended in mid air, the Museum's ability to travel down the track with maintenance equipment has been limited. This problem was recently repaired with new culvert material and replacement of original soil which was compacted and tamped down."
This repair was SOUTH of Molena. WHY would the WRM track crew go to all the trouble and expense to repair THIS location, IF there are "higher priorities" for WRM at this time, as STASH alludes to ??? Kinda begs for an explanation, huh ??
