Don't be too hard on them big dog..... they don't actually teach reading in schools anymore, they instead teach "testing to standards".
The replacement of teaching real things like reading with standardized multiple choice "testing", using scantrons, for even 2nd graders, is making it harder for teachers to fit in thing like "reading". Since after taking a month or two out of the school year to teach these kids how to do the scantrons, they don't actually have that much time left to learn how to actually "read".
To those of us who used to breath those diesel particulates and NOX fumes 12-14-16 hours straight, these newer fuel efficient and low polluting locomotive engines are a wonderful improvement. I remember the nights the fog on the LA River was so thick that the exhaust NOX at Taylor from the exhaust would form Nitric Acid, that would eat the paint off of your cars, which we had to cover up, and which we were breathing in, even as you could feel it "burning" the skin on you cheeks.
What is really frightening is that this ignorance is so widespread, even with those who should know better. I was with a supposed Cal Tech researcher who was repeating to a mob at the Pasadena City Council recently, that the dirty trucks and trains, that actually did cause serious problems in the 70's and 80's, are apparently never going to be replaced with these clean technologies, and are supposedly going to be somehow even dirtier in the future......?
