Arnold Loop near Clifside,NV.

For some reason I have become fascinated with WP's(UP) Arnold Loop near Clifside,NV.with exposure to some photos viewed recently on RP.Net. Would appreciate any and all help with books,mags or any suggestions on where I can reasearch this amazing piece of RR engineering and why it still survives today. Tried the Internet but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. From looking on Google earth it appears that the UP has tried to grade along I80 to connect the main and bypass the loop.....any thoughts??
