I rember the first time I rode Amtrak 5 across in in the early 1990s. #5 was running late enough that we got by Grant Tower as the Sun rose and so I had a daylight run all the way west. I didn't even know about this loop until I saw it. I was fascinated myself from the that point about it. I still have yet to drive out there, but with minimal traffic on it, I haven't found the right excuse at the right time to go check it out.
