Until the 70s, the line to Chemurgic was actually the TWS mainline, which one time went to Hilmar but was planned to go to Bakersfield. (It was mapped to Fresno and conceptually mapped between Fresno and Bakersfield). The line from Hatch to Turlock was re-mileposted as the mainline and the segment between Hatch and Chemurgic was re-named the Chemurgic Branch. Until about 1980, the alignment at Hatch had the Turlock mainline go through the turnout-side of the switch at Hatch, but we re-aligned the junction to have the Chemurgic Branch take the turnout. The route towards Turlock was straight-railed so that the new unit trains to Foster Farms at old Kearney station took a true mainline alignment route around the curve.
