I was incredibly privileged to be part of his California Zephyr program we filmed aboard the Silver Lariat in July '95. Huell was, in his favorite word, a truly AMAZING person and he has left an AMAZING legacy of programs about our wonderful state and its people. Huell was definitely a railfan and the numbers of programs he did with rail themes, places etc will attest to that. We last talked last spring when he called me after he had done an hour program about Kaiser Fontana-------for all the people he dealt with over the years he seemed to have an incredible memory to recall all of us. Huell was a picture of glowing health and was very "buff" and he announced his retirement on Facebook for the end of November---my hunch is that he had been given a diagnosis of one of those "your're outta here" things like pancreatic, liver etc cancer and that's what happened and why he had left us so soon after the retirement announcement. Just a guess on my part.
He has left an incredible educational legacy for the California State Teachers and Library association which was his major target audience through PBS stations---------but as for me, I am so very sorry to leave us so soon------------
