I don't know what vintage these photos are but I don't know of any Metro-bound UP coal trains that were run by HBL crews. We brought our own trains there from East Yard, spotted the loads, and pulled the empties until at least the mid 1990s.
Same for Kaiser trains going to San Pedro. We usually built the empty Kaiser train in two segments, parking the power at the 6th Street crossing by the Maritime Museum to go have dinner at The Grinder, before doubling over, air testing and heading back to L.A.
When going to San Pedro, we used to have to call HBL for permission to run from Thenard to San Pedro (not authority, permission, it was all yard limits then). To get to Metro, we used to have to call the SP to go between Thenard and what I recall was 9th Street yard. No HBL crews in either case that I have ever heard of though.
