UP experimented with pressing the date into the wood itself into the 1970's. As the ties aged, the date slowly disappeared. The Milwaukee used copper date nails in ties and lineside poles.
Over the years, whenever the price of copper got high, the nails disappeared--so they can be hard to find for collectors.
