George is correct, in fact many utilities still use date nails although I know of no date nail manufacturer that make the size nail that many railroads used in the past (2 1/2 x 1/4"). If a steel date nail is used now it is usually 2 1/2 x 15/64. Many of the date nails currently used in both the U.S. and Canada are aluminum and 1 1/2 to 2 inches in length. Some pole treatment companies, such as Osmose, may also use a date nails to attach their treatment tags to poles.
In No. California the power supplier is PG&E. The first confirmed date nail used by them was 1924. Stories exist that they were used before then, but I have not seen any nor do I know any employees that can confirm actually seeing any prior to 1924. They still use them.
