I remember reading in the book specifically on the "Sunset Limited" that black passengers traveling in California, Arizona and New Mexico were assigned without regard to color. The minute the Sunset or any other SP passenger train entered El Paso the black passengers were moved to separate cars. Law enforcement officers boarded the trains at El Paso and Beaumont and the segragation was strictly enforced. Probably in Louisiana as well. Also, don't know if the separate cars were "separate but equal" or just separate.
