Shortly after giving the food orders became the norm, every items at Carl's Jr. were assigned a number. I was never sure how the numbering system translated, but the conversation would be something like, "We want 3 #1s, 2 letter Bs, 1 letter C, one chocolate shake, etc....." It was quite interesting to listen to the radio at that time. Then when the Detectors were converted to Talkers in late 1986, that is when it really got interesting! I told a story about this once awhile back on this forum, but I'll tell it again. One day, my best friend and I were on our way home from watching trains on the Needles Sub. and this is what we heard on the radio. "SP6828 West to Mojave Yard,Over." Tom Bodacious Blair = "SP Mojave Yard, Over." "We'd like to place a food order, over." Tom Bodacious Blair = "O.K., go ahead, Over." "I'd like 2 # 1s, 3 #2s, 1 letter D, 2 letter Bs, one number SP Detector, Milepost 402.0, No Defects, No Defects.........Over." Tom Bodacious Blair = "Now let me see if I've go this staight here, you want 2 #1s, 3 #2s, 1 letter D, 2 letter Bs, one number SP Detector, Milepost 402.0, No Defects, No Defects, over." SP6828 West, "Ah, Mojave, I just decided I'm not hungry for that 1 SP Detector, instead I would like......" Then he gave the rest of the order that the Detector had stepped on. My friend pulled his truck over at the side of the road and we both fell on the floor laughing our rears off!
