Back in fall of '76, I got an invite from WP engineer Graham Snyder to ride with him from Portola to Winnemucca & back.
On the return trip we were waiting in the afternoon for the OMW to show up so we could head back to Portola.
As soon as they changed crews, somebody got a hose and commenced to wet down the nose of the lead GP-40. I asked why they bothered and Graham told me to look closer. It was all covered with small bits of horse flesh, they'd encountered a herd of wild horses out by Clifside and several got clobbered. The hose wasn't much help though, the front of the engine was still pretty dark when we left.
