UP has been replacing crossties and grade crossing panels along its lines in the Portland area and into the Columbia River Gorge. This is a project that has gone on for about two years now.

There is a string of MOW gondolas and hoppers sitting on the siding at Troutdale waiting for movement out. These have come mainly from the west end of the Gorge.

I've seen a Herzog MPM (Multi-Purpose Machine) working in the area as well. This is a double-ended, self-propelled MOW unit that has a power unit on one end, five articulated well cars, and a flatcar with a control cab and a crane unit on the other end. The crane unit can travcel along the tops of the well cars on a set of rails.
