On August 11, 1959 while working as a Coast Division fireman I was called for "messenger" service on the SP4233 which was being moved DIT from Bayshore to Watsonville Junction. It was my one and only shift on a (very cold) steam engine. I saw some engines being cut up at one or more scrap yards in South San Francisco (see link to picture below), and apparently the 4233 was headed somewhere south. I would guess that the engines to be scrapped were put out to bid and moved to wherever the highest price per ton was offered.
