PDX - thanks for the info and links about the TE10. Back in the 1954-1960 era the UP in the PNW had a lot of FM's in service; displaced from the LA area by new GP9's. Mostly H16-44's. The FM's took over all the branch lines.

The sounds of these Russian beasts do remind me some of UP's FM's. The UP units tended to blow white smoke when worked hard, but still not nearly as much as the TE10's in these videos are doing. I wonder if there might be some refining differences between Russian and USA diesel fuel that would account for the great plumes of grey/black smoke.
