The rot below the nose was from 2 things:

First, the old steam generator exhaust wasn't sealed well, so a lot of water would leak in during the rainy season and puddle on the deck.

Second, the toilet plumbing was leaky! No joke! At some point, to get better access to the rot, we yanked the toilet out, and discovered that it had been slowly seeping all those years... the hopper was full of water, too. More rainy-season leakage apparently, keeping it topped-off.
