Further on Sacramento Shops, I recall it was the largest shops complex on Southern Pacific Lines, as well as the largest railroad shop complex West of the Mississippi River. In addition to the diesel rebuildings of the 1950's through 1980's, Sacramento also rebuilt many steam locomotives, and even built new steam locomotives from the frame up. The Shops also did contract work on steam locomotives for other railroads. Remember that when Sacramento Shops began they were the first such facility on the West Coast, and therefore had to be self - sufficient in all areas of railroad locomotive construction and maintenance. Sacramento Shops even forged their own wheels and axles, as well as rail tools and supplies. Sacramento Shops also supplied parts to Sparks and Odgen Shops, as well as diesel rebuilding " kits " to Houston Shops.
