I doubt the railroad scene in 2019 (only 6 six years away) will be much different then it is now. The four big US railroads (UP, BNSF, CSX, NS) will not merger anytime soon. I think each railroad is too afraid of the business it would loss from which ever railroad it doesn't merger with. For example, the UP-CSX combination has been discussed, but I think UP sees the potential loss of traffic from NS as a big negative. The current situation allows both western railroads to get traffic from each eastern railroad. A customer in California can still choose UP to deliver his load to either CSX or NS. If the merger occurred, then the customer would have no real option.
