The track - at least that stretch - can handle the speeds but the catenary not so much. If you take another look, you'll see lots of arching from the wires bouncing up and down. Wouldn't last long. By 2017, it is hoped the Pennsy catenary wires will be replaced with constant suspension where the wires tension will become variable. This is in place where the Acela currently reaches 150 mph, albeit for about 20 miles in MA.

As for the official results - mums the word.

Either they did not go as well as hoped - OR, they went better then FRA allowed. They got permission to run 5 mph faster then anticipated future speeds of 160 mph. If they ran 166 mph, or faster, they would be in violation of permit.

So... the official record stands at 170.8 mph by the UA Turbo Train in December of 1967.
