I think digital and narrow banding has its place
And its not in Railroad road or yard channel communications
We had a good system with the Motorola Engine radios and the GE (brick) MPA and MPD packsets
with standard channel spacing.
95% of the time I could hear my conductor no matter where they was in the consist and some of the time they could talk with the dispatcher (weather in the city or out on the desert)
Now I can't hear them if they are on a long cut of cars or if they are not standing in front of a window
Its only a matter of time when we go on the ground out in the middle of nowhere (no cell service) and without the engine radio to call for help people are going to die.
Hundreds of millions on new radios down the drain!
Those brainless idiots that let this happen should be in jail!
But they will just collect a big fat bonuses and pensions
