I hope this little anecdote is sufficiently related to be of interest in this thread. Probably a dozen or so years ago I was conducting the pass. train at the Sumpter Valley. I try to be gregarious and chat it up with the pass. when possible. A passenger who identified himself as a BN retiree who had been on section crews struck up a conversation and related this story. He said (and I don't recall if he said where this occurred) they were patroling a section of track and there between the rails was a head. No torso, no limbs, just a head. He said it really would mess up his routine if he reported it so he passed on by hoping someone else would notice it and report it. This didn't happen before he passed by again later in the day. He radioed the dispatcher saying "I want to report a head lying between the rails". The dispatcher replied "Is he alive?". "No" he said, "you don't understand, it is just a head". The fellow told me they tried to figure out what train might have been involved based on the timing of his discovery. It seems like he said they found the rest of the guy tangled in the brake rigging under a car and concluded it was some unfortunate person hitching a ride that fell. He thought the dispathers question about the living head was pretty amusing.
