Last Monday July 8, I noticed two transportation moving company vehicles parked at the location of the two old AT&SF heavyweight passenger cars in Orange California. The sit on an orphan stretch of track which used to connect from the Olive sub line to the ex-Southern Pacific industrial Marlboro branch. On the way by this afternoon, Wednesday, the chain link fence which enclosed the right-of-way was gone and one of the old cars had been moved towards the west. The old grade crossing and rails still exist though paved over at Glassell Street. After work, I checked it out and walked towards the cars as a guy was walking towards me. I engaged him in conversation and though he said he had nothing to do with the cars, he had heard of movement plans at some meeting last night and stated that the cars were to be moved tomorrow, Thursday July 11. The rumor was that they will be moved to a location very close to where they have sat for so many years. My guess would be the private Coast Rail Services yard south of the 91 freeway and west of the Metrolink Orange-Olive line. Though I will be back by there tomorrow, my work will make me travel to an engineering/land survey seminar between 6:45 AM and a little after 3 PM. If you are interested in seeing these cars moved, make your way to central Orange County just south of North Glassell Street and E. Fletcher Avenue in the City of Orange. This is just west of the Metrolink Orange-Olive line.
