That line is littered with Distant Signals preceding the ABS/manual interlocking islands.
The control points at Hays, and the distant signals, are relatively new. Leave it to Omaha logic to spend the cash on distant signals instead of regular ABS block signals to protect the mainline switches in town. I'm told the distant signal on the approach to Hays K291 was located 1500 feet west of the misaligned switch. How hard would it have been to move that signal east and make it a regular ABS block signal?
