Radios can be distracting too. I once pulled the air on an engineer trainee that was engrossed in a long radio conversation with a chatty dispatcher. We were approaching a red block at the end of a siding (at 25mph) on a heavy freight. I told him that next time he had to tell her to wait since he was busy running a train. He resigned instead.

I've never liked unneeded conversation on the radio. Inevitably there's someone trying to make a joint that's stopped a car short waiting for the noise to die down.
