Questions about operation of EMD radiator fans

Could someone explain the workings of EMD's radiator fans? I'm guessing the fans are triggered by a coolant temp probe probably in the radiators but I don't know much beyond that. Does the lead fan generally engage first, then the others as coolant temps rise? Are they multi-speed? What about the weird arangements on GP30's and GP35's where it was BIG little BIG for the 3 fan sizes or GP9's with front and rear fan groups?
