So as the technology changes so does the maintenance. So, yikes, 'nother question. Did all railroads employee track walkers? Every mile? They would notify MOW and get a rail section taken out then? I read where SP was beginning to lay welded rail in the early 1960's and here I thought it was a new idea..... So much to learn, so little time....
