Jack, thanks for bringing this up. Frank and Betty did most or all of the labor when the plates were installed there. Frank was so organized that he painted the mounting hardware to match each plate.
And you are certainly right as to a possible display. If the museum put a little thought into it, they could come up with a really nice interpretive lesson in the evolution of locomotive builders.
In addition to builders and number plates, there were a few backhead plates, some whistles, a couple of headlights and 2 or 3 throttle levers.
