As Tom, Bruce, and PDX know, the legacy of James J. Hill looms large here in the Great Grey Northwest. From King Street Station, Hill St. and James St. in downtown Seattle, to his contributions to The University of Washington, to his " North Bank Road " ( SP&S ) and Oregon Trunk serving Oregon, Mr. Hill still lives on. His vision and money opened up the area to development and settlement, especially in the Inland Empire Northwest, more so than the Northern Pacific or Union Pacific did. Mr. Hill believed in Total Transportation, owning steamship lines as well before Teddy Roosevelt invoked the Sherman Anti-Trust Act against him, and E.H. Harriman as well.
