More years ago than I will admit to I was a summer intern for the SP working in the Trainmaster's office in the LA area. One day we got word of a derailment involving a tank car carrying 10,000 gal of grain neutral spirits. By the time my boss and I got to the scene we found that the car was leaking and residents from the surrounding housing were using anything they could to carry some home. SP cops were trying to control things as best they could. One guy had a plastic wash tub full and was trying to get home with the stuff sloshing all over him. A SP cop stepped in front and said. "Dump it". The guy was hesitant to comply and the cop drew his gun. My heart stopped for a minute. He used the barrel of the gun to catch the lip of the tub and tip it back all over the poor SOB. The guy ran off almost crying. With all that alcohol on his clothes the guy was a walking candle looking for a match. Of course this was long before hazmat teams. I don't even recall if the local fire dept. showed up.
