Cab forwards had a pane of glass in the front window on each side that swung upward, like many other steam locomotives did. I believe that, in addition to allowing fresh air in, these were also intended to allow a clear view when visibility through the glass was impaired. Of course, it let the cold/rain/snow in as well. Those old heads had to be tough.
