Re: SP small engines in southwest

For some reason, I tend to gravitate towards smaller engines - maybe I prefer the underdog?

I am trying to figure out where SP ran some smaller engines on the Tucson and Rio Grande divisions in the 1950s, which I am barely familiar with. SP had some TW class and a few small 2-8-0s assigned there. In the 1950s, this typically would have meant there were either restricted bridges or light (50-65#) rail.

#2505-2507 used to work there, but ended their days in Oregon, apparently transferred after the abandonment of the Cloudcroft branch. The 1949 and 1951 steam engine assignment lists I found don't show any TW class there, but at least the 2942 did, and I think I have seen photos of others. 2510-2511 were still assigned on the Rio Grande div in 1949, 2505-2507 and 2510-2511 not on the 1951 list, presumably retired.

SP started assigning new GE 70 tons to the Tucson and Rio Grande divisions. 70 tons were usually assigned to the same restricted lines as the TW class, but were also assigned to branches that did not need larger power due to small trains.

#5112 was photographed in late 1950 the same year it was delivered on the Gila Tomahawk trains 381/382 between Bowie and Globe, Arizona. By late 1954 it was reassigned to Oregon. My notes say it was on the NWP late 1951 to mid 1952, maybe my error?

#5113 was reassigned to Tucson/Yuma divisions mid 1955 to mid 1959.

#5115 built new early 1951 apparently went straight to the Rio Grande division and stayed until 1961-1962. I have found photos of in in 1957 at Patagonia and it was supposed to have taken the last train out of Tombstone.

#5118 built late 1951 was on the Tucson division until mid 1955. I recall seeing photos of it on the Gila Tomahawk.

#5119 and 5120 were both on the Tucson division for a few months when new in 1955, but built months apart probably did not cross paths. Avoiding California taxes? These were the only two built new with mu, only 5100-5106, 5109 and 5114 were retrofitted with mu.

A friend remembers a 70 ton at the shop in El Paso several times.

The Gila Tomahawk trains 381/382 ran until the end of 1953, so this would account for one unit assigned out of Bowie. Was this a mixed or passenger train? I assume it made the turn in one day.

One would have presumably work out of Benson on the Tombstone Branch Trains 940-941 Wednesday & Saturdays; Ft. Huachuca Branch Trains 942-943 Tuesdays & Fridays; Calabasas Branch (Patagonia Branch) Trains 945-946 Mondays & Thursdays (Thanks to Tony for info in post above.) I am guessing these were all mixed trains and believe SP found it prudent to keep running them with a usually empty combine instead of a caboose to justify abandoning all three branches in the early 1960s.

This would account for one 70T engine out of Bowie until 1954, another out of Benson until early 1960s. Not sure if these runs had restricted bridges/track, or just needed a small engine. Once all the small steam was retired, was another 70T kept near Benson as a backup?

I am having trouble with listed assignments between the Tucson and Rio Grand divisions. I only have a 1920s map. Did Benson stay in the Rio Grande division or did things get shuffled when the New Mexico division was eliminated?

I'm out of town working for the week so don't have my normal resources in hand. Thanks to all for your replies.
