On July 7 Peninsula Railway 2-6-2T was switching some industries in North Portland, Oregon. The 103 and her twin sister 104, both ex-logging lokeys, still had a year or so to go before giving way to the diesel. One of the few US railroads that was completely steam-powered at such a late date. If memory serves these locomotives were operated without a fireman...the engineer's side of the cab was fitted with a firing valve extension and probably an atomizer valve and maybe a blower valve. I don't know how they were able to get away with this. Perhaps someone out there can furnish the answer. Both these locomotives are in South Dakota at the Black Hills Central. The 103 is in pieces but the 104 is still used regularly.
