One reference book that I cannot locate this morning stated that SN predecessor Northern Electric operation in Marysville was required by its city franchise. Electric operation continued until the franchise expired.

Western Pacific was trying to keep NE out of Marysville. NE got access by buying a horse car line and electrifying it. Cities frequently put no steam locomotive clauses in streetcar line franchises to keep freight trains off city streets.

All this happened in 1906.
