Why & How RR curves are measured in degrees

For those of us who have been used to thinking of radii in terms of distance rather than degrees, here are some places that may help:

The Minimum railway curve radius - Wikipedia article doesn't use degrees, but gives some considerations that determine minimum radius. Since it uses both metric and English units, you can appreciate that degrees would be the same in either system.
