The Santa Fe had its own Los Angeles depot, La Grande Station until LAUPT opened in 1939. UP trains used the Los Angeles & Salt Lake depot until the 1920s, then moved into SP's Central Station until LAUPT opened.

The book "Last of the Great Stations" outlines the history of LAUPT from its inception through construction and use up into the 1980s, including the political maneuverings behind it.
