Great to blame the driver and trucking company, blame the UP, or most anyone else. I have never hear a word about the culpability of the Nevada Department of Transportation. To many, that crossing is in the middle of nowhere but there is always a fair amount of traffic. It was only the luck of the draw that it involved an Amtrak train. Had it been a westbound manifest or grain train, it would have been only a news footnote. My question becomes, why in the hell has NDOT never improved that crossing with an overpass? Plenty of dirt out there for fill material. They built a big four lane over pass on I-80 across the now Nevada Northern between Cobre and Shafter that saw only two or three trains a week if that.
