Maybe it seemed like a good idea at the time, but it seems many locomotives donated to city parks have not fared well over the years. They have suffered from rust, vandalism and other indignities.

A few lucky steamers have been pulled out of parks, restored and returned to service.

Other than that, it seems the best place to keep a preserved non-operating locomotive (diesel, steam or electric), preferably in an enclosed environment.
