Bay Coast Railroad's barge operation across Hampton Roads is indeed suspended, possibly for good, although not because of any problem with the barge. The barge (Nandua) was totally rebuilt in 2010 at the cost of a million dollars (all but 100,000 a grant from the State of Virginia), but then was in service for barely 2 years before the service was again suspended. The barge is at Cape Charles in good condition, but there is just not enough traffic to suppport such an expensive operation.

There is also a car ferry in service across the St Lawrence River at Matane Quebec which serves a large paper mill on the North Shore. This is a true car ferry, not a tug and barge.
