The San Francisco San Jose railroad began operating in 1863. It was NOT built by Stanford or the Big Four. The SFSJ owners formed the Western Pacific Railroad to build from San Jose to Sacramento. This railroad company had no connection with the WP that was built in 1909.

The Big Four froze the SFSJ out of the capital market. They did not like the idea of competition. The old WP was able to build only from San Jose to Niles Canyon before the money ran out. The railroad to Sacramento was completed by companies connected to the Big Four in 1869 four months after the Golden Spike in Utah opened the Pacific Railroad. SFSJ merged with SP in 1870.
