Don't know what part of the mid-west you live in, but in my neck of the woods (suburban Chicago) being out of a job, one that actually pays a decent wage, is entirely possible, GE Electric Motors is shutting down its plant here, 100 well paying jobs gone. We have a union grocery store, the employees are college students and older people who would love to have a 40 hour week. Blame the union as you will, but at least a union position pays something livable. I quit my job seeking, as a civil engineer, a few years ago when I, at 60 years, was informed that I was too old for the position (we want a 30 something to work between the 20 and 40 somethings I was told).
Yeah, we may have jobs here, but they are all retail, min wage and part time; and oops, Barnes & Nobles is folding up and leaving.
Yeah, there is employment, and there is employment that provides a ROI. The latter are missing.
