Not only was the NKP not an "obscure" railroad, it was a direct competitor with the New York Central in the Buffalo-Cleveland-Chicago market.

The NKP's passenger service allowed the Lackawanna to have run-through cars to and from Chicago off its Hoboken-Buffalo trains such as the "Phoebe Snow".

Even today, former NKP routes such as Buffalo-Cleveland-Chicago are integral parts of the Norfolk Southern system
